The Design and Failure of Useful Things

Friday, June 5 10:15 am – 11:45 am

Ballroom AB

Speaker:

Henry Petroski, PhD;

Aleksandar S. Vesic Professor of Civil Engineering

and Professor of History;

Duke University

Henry Petroski

Henry Petroski is a civil engineering professor at Duke University where he specializes in

failure analysis. He brings a unique insight on the goals of good engineering design, such as transparency in the ordinary devices used by medical imaging professionals.

He is a prolific author, having written more than a dozen books — most notably To Engineer is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design — including a number of titles detailing the industrial design history of common, everyday objects, such as pencils, paper clips, and silverware.

From his unique perspective, Petroski will discuss his thoughts on looking for, designing, implementing, and improving tools and applications to deal with the massive amount of image data we currently generate in our industry.

For more on Dr. Petroski’s work, see Google Scholar articles.
